Beware, Acne Medication Can Make Sore Eyes

Saturday, December 29, 2012

TEEN who suffer from acne will typically use popular medications such as Accutane or Roaccutane for their skin problems. But, a new study from Tel Aviv University has revealed that these pills can cause eye infections such as conjunctivitis (pink eye) or sties.

Doctors have long theorized connection between acne and eye infections, but until now there was little evidence of the new study, according to Dr. Gabriel Chodick of the Sackler Faculty of Medicine. "Acne itself can increase the risk of eye disease. There is a greater tendency toward inflammation and sometimes this causes irritation," he explained.

His research shows that patients who take oral medications, doubled risk of developing an eye infection when compared to those who did not suffer from acne.

"A very common side effect of Accutane and Roaccutane is the dryness of the skin and lips so that these medications will also affect lubrication of the eyelids, especially along the edge of the oil glands in the eyelids," says Dr. Chodick.

Though tears are very important because they lubricate the ocular surface and clean the dirt, including bacteria and viruses. Infection of the gland itself can cause sties and more serious bacterial infections that can lead to swelling of the entire eyelid

He suggested that patients should ask doctors how to minimize damage to the eye. One simple step is to use artificial tears or eye drops. The findings are published in the Archives of Dermatology.
