Treat Acne with Virus

Thursday, December 27, 2012

Scientists in the U.S. have succeeded in isolating and studying the genomes of 11 viruses known as phages are double-stranded DNA that can infect and kill bacteria that cause acne. The breakthrough could potentially pave the way for the topical treatment using viruses or viral products to treat skin conditions, especially the youth.

"There are two potential directions that can be used is quite clear from the study. The first is the possibility of using phages directly as a treatment for acne. The second is the opportunity to use the phage-derived component to their activities," said study author from the University of Pittsburgh Doctor Graham Hatfull .

Acne-causing bacteria Propionibacterium acnes is a 'resident' normal human skin. However, the number increased substantially during puberty and cause an inflammatory response in the skin.

Dr. Hatfull and colleagues at the University of Pittsburgh together with scientists from the University of California and then isolate phage and Propionibacterium acnes from acne-infected volunteers and is not. The results of the genome that are found surprising. According to their lack of genetic diversity showed resistance to phage-based antimicrobial therapy were less likely to be developed.

All phage carries a gene called endolysin protein, an enzyme that breaks estimated bacterial cell wall and kills the bacteria. Endolysin of phage viruses that may also be useful as a topical anti-acne therapy.
