Acne Medication Help Fight AIDS

Thursday, January 24, 2013

DRUG minocycline acne that has been used for decades, based on the findings of the researchers, it can handle immune cells infected with HIV. Under these conditions, HIV was silent before returning to live and spread the infection.

According to investigators, the antibiotic drug minocycline Minocin marketed under names such as these, can be added to the list of AIDS drugs that are already available.

"The big challenge facing physicians in treating patients with HIV is to keep the virus remains in a dormant state," says Janice Clements, professor of molecular and comparative pathobiology from Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine.

"Although drugs are now very effective in suppressing active replication, minocycline could be another defense against the virus," added Clements, said in healthday.com, Sunday (21/3).

Clements stated that minocycline makes cells known as T cells as targets and make it difficult for these cells to reproduce. Furthermore, this will complicate the spread of HIV, the cause of AIDS.

"This drug is ideal for HIV because the target is immune activation aspect is very specific," says Gregory Szeto of the Retrovirus Laboratory at Hopkins.

These findings will be published in writing in the Journal of Infectious Diseases 15th edition next April.
